Caltrain Design-Build Electrification

Balfour Beatty is providing design-build services for the electrification of the 52-mile Caltrain corridor between San Francisco and San Jose. As part of the Caltrain Modernization Early Investment Program to replace Caltrain’s diesel locomotive trains, Balfour Beatty is electrifying and upgrading the performance, operating efficiency, capacity, safety, sustainability and reliability of Caltrain’s commuter rail service through San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties – as well as 17 cities along the corridor.

Balfour Beatty is designing and building a 25kv AC overhead catenary system to serve as the power source for the new electric vehicles that will carry commuters throughout the area. The OCS will be powered by two traction power substations, one switching substation and seven paralleling substations that Balfour Beatty is constructing. The company is also replacing signal systems and ground existing facilities as part of the process to electrify the 52 miles of existing right-of-way rail tracks.

With in-house capabilities to build the infrastructure, signals, traction power and systems components of the Caltrain Modernization Early Investment Program contract, Balfour Beatty has teamed with local designer PGH Wong Engineering and STV to provide design services.
