Balfour Beatty Announces Executive Leadership Promotions for California Operations

SAN DIEGO, CA – Balfour Beatty announces the promotion of three executive leaders in California: John Bernardy is promoted to executive vice president and business unit leader; Tim Berry is promoted to senior vice president and business unit leader; and Gil Fullen is promoted to senior vice president of business acquisition. Their promotions are evidence of Balfour Beatty’s commitment to recognizing our top talent and elevating our leadership bench strength to meet the expanding needs of clients in the high-growth K-12 education market in California and the federal market expansion.
A Balfour Beatty veteran of 33 years, John Bernardy has successfully led teams in the delivery of several schools for the company’s repeat clients, including Del Mar Unified School District (USD) and Tustin USD. Most recently, Bernardy's team delivered the Tustin iconic USD Legacy Magnet Academy project, an $85 million state-of-the-art school built on the historic, former Marine Corps Air Station. John is also notable for opening Balfour Beatty’s Orange County and Los Angeles offices in Newport Beach and expanding the company’s operations into Ventura, Los Angeles, and the Inland Empire. As former senior vice president for the last decade, John is known for his tenacity, hard work ethic, and trusted relationship building with clients, and for leading a consistent, sustainable, and profitable business unit that attracts top talent.
Tim Berry has been with Balfour Beatty since 1991 and has led significant work for casino/gaming, K-12, and military markets, including projects with lease-leaseback contracts. During his tenure, he has successfully led pursuit teams to win over $515 million of K-12 projects from 2019 to 2021. Tim has cultivated a strong, long-term relationship with the company’s client, San Diego USD, successfully delivering five projects for the school district. In addition, Tim has extensive experience in delivering Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) work, most recently the Trident III Launch Test Facility at the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Center. Tim will continue to lead federal pursuits for multiple award construction contracts (MACC).
Gil Fullen joined+ Balfour Beatty 17 years ago and currently is focused on the K-12 and higher education markets in Los Angeles/Orange County. Additionally, he has successfully led multiple projects and several multi-million-dollar school district bond programs. Gil works relentlessly to build the company’s brand through talent recruitment fairs and industry speaking engagements and is known throughout California as a leader and expert in his field, attaining the credential of Certified Construction Manager from the Construction Management Association of America (CMMA), serving on Coalition for Adequate School Housing’s (CASH) Legislation Committee, School Facilities Leadership Academy (SFLA), and fostering strong client relationships throughout the state. Gil leads the company’s national Hispanic/Latin@ affinity group, named Somos, aimed at bringing together diverse team members and promoting diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces nationwide.
