The Power of Precision

by Balfour Beatty

On the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Health Professionals Division Terry Cafeteria project, Balfour Beatty exemplified what it means to be a Relentless Ally on a series of interconnected mini projects that collectively required complex coordination and execution. From initial planning through execution, Balfour Beatty proactively engaged all stakeholders to achieve seamless operations throughout the work.

NOVA RenderingOur scope of work encompassed sensitive utilities, including a Florida Power & Light (FPL) transformer installation and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) power switchover. Both deliveries required careful planning, precise phasing and coordination with the owner, their physical plant team, our trade partners and FPL to minimize disruption to building operations.

Balfour Beatty anticipated challenges from congested site conditions and implemented necessary workarounds to maintain progress. By addressing FPL’s needs immediately, the project team eliminated potential delays and kept the project moving forward.

During the scheduled shutdown weekend, which involved a full power shutdown while the building operated on emergency power, our team coordinated closely with the extensive team of stakeholders to align schedules, plan standby support and guarantee uninterrupted work. These stakeholders included the owner, trade partners, FPL and the Authority Having Jurisdiction.

Balfour Beatty proactively secured early inspections and approvals, allowing continuous execution from Friday evening through Sunday. As a testament to our efforts, the transformer installation was completed ahead of schedule, with full power restored by Saturday evening and zero operational interruptions. Jonathan Pearch

“These projects presented unique challenges, including evolving and often changing requirements from Florida Power & Light. Our team responded promptly to every update, providing documentation, clarifications, field verification, coordination and on-site support in real time,” says Jonathan Pearch, vice president, operations in Balfour Beatty’s South Florida market.

In a similar effort, the Automatic Transfer Switch power switchover involved relocating non-essential Automatic Transfer Switch units from the existing mechanical room to allow demolition and new construction. Life safety systems remained fully operational, and the relocation was completed in under four hours, ahead of the originally scheduled eight-hour shutdown. This work was executed through careful sequencing and coordination, safeguarding critical building systems by understanding existing conditions and potential impacts.

Across both examples, Balfour Beatty navigated evolving operational requirements through precise sequencing, logistics coordination and field verification, eliminating delays and keeping work on track. Through focused planning and real-time problem-solving, all work was completed ahead of schedule, with power restored earlier than anticipated.

These outstanding outcomes reflect our ability to manage complex technical efforts while maintaining operations and exceeding expectations, reinforcing our role as a trusted partner and Relentless Ally committed to delivering excellence, service and results without compromise.
