Preconstruction leaders across the nation recently took center stage to share some of these industry-leading solutions as presenters and panelists at the 8th annual Advancing Preconstruction Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Joining over 1,000 clients, designers, contractors and trade professionals, our preconstruction experts shared solutions for identifying risk, lean delivery and design methods and effective talent recruitment strategies.

Identifying and Managing the Risk of Winning Work to Maximize Portfolio Profitability

During this workshop, Justin and Landon shared that a risk-centric preconstruction approach is essential to give teams the opportunity to win. The pair highlighted new processes and tools firms are implementing to manage the risk of getting work and collaborating with project partners to maximize the success of projects.

Recruiting Qualified Individuals to Create the Best Preconstruction Team
Amar Vel, Senior Vice President of Preconstruction, Georgia

Alongside peers from Mortenson, GH Phipps Construction Companies, BOND Building Construction and Hourigan, Amar shared strategies to attract and retain top preconstruction talent. Panelists gave advice on communicating the value of estimating as a career path, crafting quality job descriptions and establishing collaborative and innovative working environments that attract potential recruits.

Track 6: Supply Chain
Jake Jaenicke, Preconstruction Manager, California

Jake acted as chair of the supply chain track, which covered minimizing project delays, overcoming long lead times and building on time. As chair, Jake introduced speakers, hosted Q&As and led group discussions.

Coordinating Target Value Design (TVD): Harnessing Lean to Optimize Costs
Adam Morris, Chief Estimator, Texas

Adam, along with Cameron Vrzak, director of preconstruction services at Prism Electric, explored the key principles of TVD including team buy-in, establishing clear expectations and setting roles and responsibilities. This workshop outlined the importance of embracing a lean and collaborative mindset as well as strategies for reducing waste, avoiding re-work resulting from downstream design changes and reducing costs without extending project schedules or lowering quality.
