NORTH CAROLINA - London-based contractor Balfour Beatty’s Southeast U.S. division has been awarded a $242.35 million design-build contract by North Carolina DOT to improve the U.S. Highway 70 corridor, the future Interstate 42, between Raleigh and the Port of Morehead City to interstate standards.

The project will make improvements between the Havelock Bypass and east of Thurman Road in Craven County, North Carolina, the company announced on Feb. 1. Construction is expected to begin later this year and is scheduled for completion in 2028.

The firm will upgrade the 6.4-mile section of U.S. 70 to improve mobility and military interconnectivity, support economic development and increase safety along the corridor, according to the company.

This project is one of several that the company is working on for NCDOT, according to the release — the U.S. 70 Havelock Bypass and U.S. 70 James City projects are also under Balfour Beatty’s U.S. Southeast division, and have been under construction since 2019 and 2021, respectively.

“We look forward to building on our more than 20-year relationship with NCDOT and the opportunity to help the state achieve its long-term transportation needs in its growing communities,” said Mark Johnnie, Balfour Beatty senior vice president of Southeast Civil Operations.

Balfour Beatty has announced a series of wins lately. 

On Jan. 17, the company announced that it was building the Grand Hyatt Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel. 

The company also won seven projects on the West Coast worth $235 million combined last year, and completed the $666 million Southern Gateway Project in Texas in November through a joint venture with Irving, Texas-based Fluor.
