Southwestern College Wellness & Aquatic Complex

The Balfour Beatty team completed the new $54 million, LEED Silver Wellness & Aquatics Complex bringing to life Southwestern College’s (SWC) vision for the project— a facility where the spirit of sportsmanship can flourish, athletic performance can be showcased and where exciting events can be held. The facility now stands as a gateway to the greater community with a stronger connection between the College, its students, administrators, and athletes.

The 80,475 square-foot complex houses a three-court gymnasium accompanied by team locker rooms for men's and women's basketball and volleyball, 9,000 square feet of cardio and weight training space, and 11,000 square feet of multi-purpose instructional space, staff offices, and a community room with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system that allows the space to be used for community events and banquets. The gymnasium is designed for supporting events that can accommodate up to 2,500 people. The aquatic area consists of three pools. A 50-meter “Fast Pool” with deep lanes, wave restraining gutters supports record-setting competitive swim events and multi-team water polo competition and practice; a 50-meter “Flex Pool” designed with variable depths to support diving, physical education programs, recreational swims, and instructional water safety programs; and a 25-yard “Adaptive Therapy Pool.”

The design engages the community and resonates with the architectural heritage of the campus. Serving as both the home for several school athletic teams as well as the wellness and recreation epicenter of the campus, the project exemplifies school pride through iconic forms and place-making. Natural light, large open spaces, and modern amenities draw outside community memberships. Designed to achieve LEED Silver, the project exceeded expectations by achieving enough points to be considered for LEED Gold!

“It is rare that you find a construction management team that exceeds expectations in design assist, field engineering, construction trade management, and coordination, in addition to owner needs for clear communication, project fiscal management, and timely and complete recommendations and guidance,” said Mark Claussen, program manager for business and financial affairs at Southwestern College. “The Balfour Beatty team highly represents the construction management professional sector and the owner in their role as a team leader and partner in complex facility delivery.”
