Balfour Beatty Celebrates Demolition Milestone at Brooklyn & Church Site
June 1, 2026
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Balfour Beatty celebrated the completion of demolition activities at the Brooklyn & Church project, on behalf of Asana Partners in partnership with MRP Realty and Rockefeller Group, during a milestone event held May 28 at the project site.
City officials and community stakeholders joined the project team to recognize the achievement and highlight the role of adaptive reuse projects in supporting sustainable growth and long‑term investment in Charlotte as the transformation of one of Uptown Charlotte’s most prominent developments moves forward.
To complete this phase of construction, project teammates reduced the existing building by 250,000 square feet through detailed structural demolition, creating an open plaza and opening tower floors for future residential units.
Demolition work also involved the removal of 1,800 pieces of precast from the building’s exterior, as well as the careful removal of building sections located over or immediately adjacent to public sidewalks. These activities were completed while maintaining public safety and uninterrupted access to Bank of America Stadium during events.
“This milestone reflects the level of planning and collaboration required on an adaptive reuse project of this scale,” said Jeff Sandeen, president of Balfour Beatty in the Carolinas. “From preconstruction to diversion efforts and the completion of demolition, our teammates have worked consistently to position the project for success. Completing demolition is a major step forward for the Brooklyn & Church development and recognizes the team’s ongoing progress and commitment to safety and sustainability.”
Prior to demolition, the team executed extensive preconstruction and early site work activities as well as led a large‑scale material diversion effort, successfully redirecting more than 576 tons of furniture and equipment from landfills. Through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, more than 142,000 pounds of furniture and kitchen equipment were donated for reuse across the Carolinas, extending the life of materials originally housed within the building and supporting community organizations before demolition began.
With demolition complete, the project team will now transition into the next phase of work which features the installation of the new exterior and windows, build-out of residential units and constructing the Marquee Retail Building at the corner of the site.
Brooklyn & Church is transformational for Charlotte and the first office-to-retail and multifamily conversion project of scale in North Carolina. Once complete, the development will feature 448 luxury residential units and a full city block of walkable, vibrant retail. Community features include an open-air plaza, green spaces throughout, and pedestrian walkways connecting the city’s growing Stadium District to Uptown’s business hub and active arts and culture scene. The project is slated for completion in late 2027.
