SAN FRANCISCO – Balfour Beatty proudly announces their recognitions of several high distinctions at the 2026 Associated General Contractors (AGC) of California Installation & Awards Gala for their involvement in the construction of the Caltrain Electrification project. The honors highlight the project’s technical excellence, industry-leading collaboration and the company’s continued leadership in advancing complex rail and civil infrastructure across the region.

The Caltrain Electrification project was celebrated as a winner for the Constructor Award in the Heavy Civil $100 Million and Over category, recognizing Balfour Beatty’s role in delivering one of the most significant rail modernization efforts in California. The team was also named as a winner in the Excellence in Partnering category, highlighting the strong and innovative collaboration that defined the multi-year effort.

In addition to recognition for Balfour Beatty’s execution and partnership, the AGC presented Caltrain with the prestigious Owner of the Year award. This honor underscores Caltrain’s leadership, stewardship and unwavering commitment to modernizing transportation for the communities it serves. The award also reflects the strength of the partnership that enabled the success of the electrification program.

Commenting on the significance of both the project and partnership, Mark Konchar, Balfour Beatty US President of Infrastructure and Managing Director of Rail operations said, “Standing among the state’s elite builders our partnership with Caltrain was recognized for its technical complexity and collaborative spirit, and for this we are humbled. This recognition reflects Balfour Beatty’s core values and our teammates’ extraordinary dedication in delivering the first project in North America to transition diesel rail infrastructure to an electrified system. It also showcases the strength of our global enterprise, bringing together expertise, resources and supply chain partners from across Balfour Beatty to successfully deliver this transformative program.”

The Caltrain Electrification program modernized 52 miles of commuter rail through a landmark $2.4 billion effort that delivered significant improvements in service capacity, emissions reduction and transit efficiency. Using a shared risk‑allowance framework and a “Zipper” governance model, the team resolved complex issues quickly and addressed 40% of risks with no commercial impact.

Construction was executed while maintaining daily service for 65,000 riders by dividing the corridor into 15 work zones, operating primarily at night and deploying innovative tools such as contractor‑operated wire trains and agile elevated work platforms. Despite supply chain disruptions and severe weather, the project achieved substantial completion in September 2024.

Securing these top recognitions at AGC of California’s flagship event reinforces Balfour Beatty’s leadership in the rail and western Infrastructure markets. The awards acknowledge the company’s commitment to operational excellence, collaboration, safety and delivering world-class infrastructure that strengthens communities and enables sustainable mobility.
