A Relentless Ally for REI’s Sustainable Dreams

Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) began as a group of 23 mountain climbing buddies and is now the nation's largest consumer recreational cooperative. As one of Fortune Magazine’s 100 best companies to work for, their passion for outdoor adventure shines through in each and every store a customer visits. Their authentic passion for preserving outdoor life is evident in their sustainable business practices, which include owning six facilities that are LEED certified.

Balfour Beatty played an integral role in assisting REI with upholding their commitment to environmental stewardship by delivering projects that not only promote outdoor adventure but also fulfill their green building dreams. The number of retail projects Balfour Beatty has completed for REI span up and down the west coast. However, the most significant projects were the build-out of the award-winning Portland store and the renovation of REI’s Seattle flagship store. Both projects exemplify REI’s mission to “get outside and play” and demonstrate Balfour Beatty’s value proposition as a Relentless Ally for the success of the company’s dreams.

REI Portland

Inside The Edge, an 11-story mixed-use building in Portland’s Pearl District, REI commands a 37,000-square-foot street level area with full-height windows on three sides. A 2-story climbing rock built from steel tubes covered in styrofoam and sand blasted concrete flanks the store entrance. An open steel staircase and point-of-sale area with a parallel pergola feature define the space. This project incorporates green building practices and recycled materials to meet high environmental standards. REI Portland was the first of the company’s stores nationwide to receive LEED Gold Certification in the Commercial Interiors category.

REI Seattle

Balfour Beatty scheduled and managed the remodel work for the REI Flagship Store in Seattle, Washington. A new customer service area was built out, and we installed all owner provided items. The scope of work also entailed demolition of a paddle shop, storage room, safe, and cash machine. Keeping the store functioning and fully operational throughout the construction phases was a major focus of our work, and Balfour Beatty has been recognized by REI Operations for the high level of customer care provided.
