As part of a team, Balfour Beatty was responsible for the design and construction of Phase 1 of the Exposition Line light rail transit (LRT) extension near Los Angeles, California. Balfour Beatty was responsible for the trackwork.

The new 8.5-mile addition to Metro’s rail system extended from an existing Metro rail station in downtown Los Angeles to a location near the intersection of Washington and National Boulevards in Culver City. The Expo Line shares track and two stations with the Metro Blue Line before diverging to travel along Exposition Boulevard. The Expo Line project included the design and construction of nine new stations along its route and two Park and Ride lots. Trees, shrubs and vines were planted along the corridor to create a park-like atmosphere.

Located, in Culver City, the full length of this 8.5-mile LRT line involved construction across major streets in central Los Angeles. Traffic management plans were developed, implemented and coordinated with city agencies, Caltrans, local businesses and communities. Safety of the work crews, traveling public and pedestrians was paramount, and the project was completed without a safety incident.

Subsequent projects completed along the Expo Line include the following:
