Reliable Partnership Key to Cabela’s Retail Success
Many outdoor outfitters have come and gone with the changing of seasons and trends. Established in 1961, Cabela’s Incorporated -- the World’s Foremost Outfitter® of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear -- is an example of a retail success story grown from a simple mail-order business to the world’s largest direct marketer of outdoor merchandise with more than 70 brick and mortar stores across North America. Balfour Beatty was honored to have been chosen to partner with Cabela’s to deliver quality and unique stores throughout the Northwest.
Despite many accolades and strong growth, Cabela's continues to embrace its original philosophy that the customer is No. 1 - an attitude instilled by the company founders. Their dedication to the customer experience is just one of many reasons Cabela's designs retails stores with great attention to detail and craftsmanship. Cabela’s vision for their new stores was simple. They wanted to establish a reliable partnership with a contractor who could guard their interests and deliver on time. Creating the right partnership was especially important since their expansion plan covered the management of a number of projects simultaneously across North America.
Balfour Beatty’s performance and partnership with Cabela’s flourished and to date they have delivered five stores spanning from Montana to Oregon. While most of the construction scopes went as planned, the Cabela’s in Tualatin, Oregon experienced an unforeseen permitting issue and exterior façade revisions created a four-week delay. Understanding that Cabela’s vision of opening on-time was critical, Balfour Beatty creatively developed a compressed schedule to resolve the delay. In addition, Balfour Beatty changed the sequence of construction by dividing the building in half and started steel erection, roofing and slab-on grade on one half while the other half was completing the exterior CMU walls.
Despite the unexpected four-week schedule setback and three days lost due to snow in January, Balfour Beatty finished the Tualatin project on time. Cabela’s was also impressed with the level of quality considering the challenges, and has continued to grow their partnership with Balfour Beatty to this day.
