Mike Weber is Passionate About Leading Teams to Victory

At the young age of five, Mike Weber was already earning a paycheck. He worked as a helper in his father’s Colorado steel shop, which is where he was first introduced to the meaning of a solid work ethic and the world of construction. Mike attributes this early exposure in the business as one of the main reasons he chose a career in construction, which now spans over two decades. Perhaps equally important to shaping Mike’s passion in the business comes from his background in sports. As an avid lacrosse player growing up and in his spare time, he credits his ability to lead construction projects to successful outcomes much like his ability to lead sports teams to championship wins.
Mike began his career with Balfour Beatty in 2003 as an intern. He quickly advanced to his current position of project executive by demonstrating a positive attitude, industry expertise, and outstanding leadership skills. Part of Mike’s work ethic includes a commitment to always doing the right thing by his clients, which is appreciated and respected by everyone. He’s also inspired by watching a project being built from start to finish—and moving on to his next challenge with a revitalized excitement and energy. That, plus the opportunity to immerse himself within so many different neighborhoods and communities throughout San Diego, is what keeps him motivated.
Mike is especially connected to Balfour Beatty’s education clients, which has been an area of focus and expertise throughout his tenure with the company. In fact, since 2013 Mike has been helping to change the landscape at MiraCosta College where over the span of four years, he has helped build six campus projects including the state-of-the-art Concert Hall and Arts Building, as well as the Creative Arts Complex—both located at the College’s Oceanside campus. Serving as Relentless Ally for this client has enhanced the cumulative experience for all stake holders. Mike can take credit for fostering the trusted relationships that have proven to be successful time and time again.
Mike is currently working with another repeat client, the San Diego Community College District. He’s overseeing the construction of Mesa College’s new $32 million Center for Business Technology building—and is also using technology in a new way to enhance the project’s outcome.
He came up with the idea while working on obtaining a license to operate a Small Unmanned Aircraft System (SAUS) Drone. After reviewing a subcontractor’s earthwork contract—which was written for maximum import and export quantities—he saw there was potential in using the drone to calculate more exact quantities. He has been in previous situations where negotiations between the earthwork subcontractor and the owner have turned adversarial because each have differing opinions on actual amounts. To alleviate this potentially sticky situation, Mike used the drone to capture aerial images of the site, which are then combined with drone data software capable of producing calculated, verifiable earthwork quantities. Once the exact quantities were known, they were applied to an agreed upon unit cost, thus alleviating potential conflicts between the owner and the subcontractor. An added benefit resulted with this effort—the owner received a credit that can be use on enhancements, or saved for a future project.
Mike has the heart of a champion. His desire to win for his clients, and everyone he works with, is why he consistently delivers victorious results. He is a graduate of California State University, Chico where he earned a B.S. in Construction Management. When not working, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, along with his puppy German Shepard. He’s also a big fan of taking on as many home improvement projects as can fit into his busy schedule.
