Celebrating Becky Fisher, Relentless Ally
Sixteen years ago, a bright-eyed Becky Fisher entered our office in San Diego prepared to interview for a job as a receptionist. By the time she left, she had landed a bigger role working as the new field office manager where she would be supporting the team building MiraCosta College’s Library and Information Hub. That moment marked the beginning of Becky’s promising career in construction, where she is known for inspiring, motivating and serving as a role model for both clients and teammates.
It’s no coincidence that Becky has since climbed the ranks within the organization. Her positive attitude, leadership skills and dedication are just three of her many qualities that have propelled her advancement. Most recently, Becky was promoted from project engineer to project manager overseeing the construction of a 390-seat performing arts theatre project located on an occupied campus at Grossmont College.
Becky is also a wife and mother of three children ages 16, nine and six. She says her family is what keeps her grounded, but admits her phone calendar is what keeps her organized and able to juggle her multi-faceted responsibilities.
Throughout her professional journey, Becky has faced multiple challenges, including finding her voice in this industry. For a long time, she questioned if she had as much to offer as other professionals with more experience. Over time, Becky learned that her only limitations were the ones she set herself.
Once Becky realized this truth, she gained confidence to feel empowered as a woman in the industry. She admires her teammates for consistently challenging her to lead by example and encouraging her to show up every day as her best self. It’s what keeps her aptly prepared to swiftly handle any new challenge the day may bring.
Becky learned tenacity and grit as project engineer overseeing her first design-build project, the Zura Hall Housing Refresh at San Diego State University. The project involved installing $50 million of work in 12 months. In addition, the project site was located in the center of a bustling, occupied campus. This experience allowed her to navigate the complexities of a project delivery method that closely resembled Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). Becky’s team was co-located in one trailer with mechanical, plumbing, electrical and framing trade partners. Everyone from the trades to the owner to the design team understood what would be required to ensure the project stayed on track. When the project completed, the owner’s expectations were exceeded. In fact, the project earned a prestigious award from the Design-Build Institute of America Western Pacific Region.
Becky not only spends time in the field, she also devotes many hours serving as the company’s Operations Training Team (OTT) chairperson. Her job is to embed national company training programs locally and to organize quarterly trainings. This role is especially rewarding for Becky, because she’s benefited from countless mentors within the company who have devoted time to share their knowledge and experiences. As chairperson, she can give back to colleagues who are well on their way to achieving bigger and better things in their careers. Her goal is to make connections between experienced individuals and entry-level employees who are just starting out. She knows first-hand the value of these relationships and is committed to paying her success forward.
