Balfour Beatty teams with Escondido USD to create an Outdoor Learning Classroom for the 8th Annual Green Apple Day of Service

Balfour Beatty, alongside the San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC) partnered with Escondido Union School District to host their eighth annual Green Apple Day of Service!  The international day of service takes place on the same day every year at different schools around the world. This year, Felicita Elementary School – an Escondido USD school – was selected based on a desire for an outdoor interactive learning environment and lack of funding.

Over 100 eager volunteers, including students, staff, families, and supporting community and trade partners, willingly dedicated their Saturday to one common goal: creating an Outdoor Learning Classroom for students to learn and engage in a healthy, connective, hands-on way.

“This is quite an exciting day here at Felicita Elementary School,” replied Principal, Marty Hranek. “I tell ya, you talk about partnerships, this is the partnership of my dreams. We have Balfour Beatty here sponsoring a learning garden for us….Very exciting and something we’re going to be able to enjoy here at Felicita for years to come! Really, just amazing. Rain could not hold us back. This is the partnership of the century!”

Additional efforts to transform and enhance the outdoor learning environment included the creation of reading, math, and play stations, a new shed, irrigation, picnic tables, walkways, painting, spreading mulch throughout the campus, planting a giant Crepe Myrtle tree, and installing a four-foot Bobcat Mascot hand-carved out of wood – placed in special honor at the entrance of the school.

The effort supports and enhances Felicita Elementary School, providing students and teachers an opportunity to become further engaged and inspired by outdoor learning.

“It’s always incredible to see this many volunteers come out on a Saturday to help enhance the learning opportunity for local students,” stated Josh Dean, executive director for the San Diego Green Building Council. “This year’s projects are really unique in that they’re building an outdoor learning center and reading garden. This allows the opportunity for the students to get out of the classroom, reconnect with nature, and take experiential learning to a whole new level.”
