Hearts and Hammers: Teammates Use Their Passion to Help Others

Mother Teresa once said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Several Balfour Beatty teammates made their own ripples by volunteering for multiple projects for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando. Over the course of five weekends in 2015, they worked together to construct or rehabilitate old houses into dream homes for others in the community.

The effort, led by senior project engineer Jeff Ward, kicked off in April and continued nearly every month since with the final volunteer event in November. Jeff first became involved with the Habitat for Humanity organization in North Carolina when working on a university project in Boone, NC. When he and wife Kellylynn, who has consistently been part of the volunteer opportunities, moved to Orlando a few years ago, they got involved in several local Habitat home builds and have remained involved.

“Building is something I know how to do, so being able to put my skills into good use outside of work has been incredibly rewarding,” says Jeff.

The weekend volunteer activities have included nearly everything involved in a typical house build from framing to installing siding, painting and laying sod. The teams are assigned the location and building needs by Katie Kochan, local volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando. One of the biggest accomplishments to date was the work done on a new home on W. Washington Street. The new home was constructed at the site of a former dilapidated, boarded-up house that was rebuilt for the Brown family who moved in on June 30th.

“We could not build homes without amazing organizations like Balfour Beatty,” praised Katie Kochan. “Thank you all for your help and continued support!”
