It’s annual tradition for Balfour Beatty and Sharefest to come together to co-host an annual Golf Outing and use the money raised to complete school beautification projects in support of Sharefest’s Annual Workday — an event that mobilizes thousands of volunteers throughout Los Angeles County to complete tangible projects that change the quality of life for residents. This year, the Golf Outing was held on April 28 at the Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif. and raised a record-setting $135,770. The total raised since the Golf Outing’s inception in 2013 is approaching $500,000!
Sharefest’s 2017 Workday was held on Saturday, May 6. That’s when more than 350 Balfour Beatty employees, contractors, vendors, site staff, students, family, and community members joined together to complete 22 beautification projects located on school campuses within the Redondo Beach, Torrance, Culver City, and Wiseburn school districts. All of this wonderful work was provided at no costs to the schools. Enhancements included landscaping, painting, mural artwork, cleaning, building custom picnic tables, re-slurrying and re-striping basketball courts.
This is the 8th year the company has supported the Sharefest Workday, and the fifth year that additional financial support was provided through Balfour Beatty/Sharefest’s annual Golf Outing. The funds raised from the Golf Outing also benefit Sharefest’s Youth Development Academy, a summer program offering academic and extracurricular activities to underserved middle and high school students, in addition to funding scholarships for students interested in pursuing higher education in the construction industry. The scholarships will be awarded to select students who attend schools located in each of the four school districts Balfour Beatty is supporting during this year’s Workday.
“Once again, employees and industry partners came together for a great day of golf, support activities associated with Sharefest Work Day, and share in the experience of knowing our combined efforts will benefit our local communities, said John Bernardy, senior vice president of Balfour Beatty in Newport Beach. “It’s tremendously rewarding, and a tradition we are proud to carry on.”
“Time and again the team at Balfour Beatty surpasses expectations in their efforts to give back to our communities,” said Chad Mayer, executive director of Sharefest. “Not only do they give generously and adopt important projects across several school districts, but their amazing volunteers bring energy and enthusiasm as they see these projects through to completion at our annual Workday. We are thrilled to be partnering again this year, and can't wait to see the transformations that will happen and lives that will be impacted because of their generosity."
Recently, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors honored Balfour Beatty for its support of Sharefest Workday, and named the company a winner of the County’s “Our Health, Our Community, Our Los Angeles County “Southeast” contest. A certificate noting this recognition was presented during this year’s Golf Outing.
