Art of Flight: Helping Bring Smiles to Children and Families in Our Community

Employees in Jacksonville volunteered their time to assemble a featured 40-foot art installation, consisting of 200 glass birds, in the heart of the newly renovated Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Jacksonville. Proving that “give where you live” is more than just a motto in this Balfour Beatty office – it’s a mission.

The purpose of the RMHC of Jacksonville is simple - to serve as “A-Home-Away-From-Home” for children and their families in times of need. This location hosts over 25,000 unique visitors and cares for over 1,200 families each year. When Senior Project Manager, Victor Gilpin heard about this special project, he jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Accompanied by Jacksonville employees Gary Pedroni, Travis Timm and Edwin Willmore, Victor and his team joined a group of construction volunteers to put these colorful, glass birds into flying motion. The giant flock installation is suspended on several 40-foot strands exhibited in the heart of the building’s monumental stair tower – known as the Aviarium that leads guests up to the building’s rooftop garden.

The team spent hours carefully installing each fragile creation onto metal cords suspended from the building’s towering ceiling. The fabrication of the art piece itself was product of a local husband and wife team at Burnt Glassworks. Overall, the piece took over two weeks to create and a full day of collaboration to prep, assemble and install. The final product is an awe-inspiring display of vivid colors, whimsy and joy for the many volunteers and guests that call it home.

The opportunity to contribute to the local community was an impactful experience for Victor and his team. “The smiles that this glass installation brought to the families, kids and staff of the Ronald McDonald House was truly remarkable,” recalls Victor. “Contributing our time and efforts is the least we can do. We look forward to contributing to such a great cause again.”
