A team of volunteers from Balfour Beatty in Austin, led by Project Manager Jeremy Machicek, donated their time and effort in coordinating in-kind donations totaling more than $13,000 during the 2014 Christmas in October sponsored by the Real Estate Council of Austin (RECA). Each year the real estate group selects an organization to receive an early Christmas gift of renovations to its facility. The 2014 beneficiary was SafePlace, a non-profit that serves more than 5,000 victims of domestic and sexual violence annually in Austin.
“The work we undertook was a huge success and everyone should be extremely proud of all that we were able to accomplish for this very deserving charity,” Jeremy said. “The time and effort we put in as a team has undoubtedly made a marked difference in the experience of the many women and children who are served by SafePlace.”
Jeremy led the coordination effort for in-kind donations from area subcontractors who donated more than 20 granite blocks used as decorative seating elements, and the heavy equipment and manpower necessary to transport and place the granite blocks on site. A group from Balfour Beatty joined more than 100 volunteers in the beautification effort of the SafePlace campus.
“They made our campus a much more beautiful space, especially with the playground for the younger kids,” said Steven Olender, community relations coordinator for SafePlace. “This was the greatest gift for SafePlace.”
Volunteers built a walking trail and installed a new play- ground, a sitting area and granite benches at the SafePlace shelter in Austin for Make A Difference Day in October.
