    New Parkland Hospital Honored as Project of the Year by the Regional Hispanic Contractors Association

    DALLAS – The new Parkland Acute Care Hospital was named Project of The Year by the Regional Hispanic Contractors Association (RHCA) during the association's recent Pillar Awards. The RHCA promotes and supports the advancement and economic growth of the Hispanic contractors in Texas. The new $1.3 billion, 1.9 million-square-foot LEED silver certified Parkland Hospital features 862 patient rooms, 120 emergency department rooms and provides world-class healthcare to the citizens of Dallas County.
    The new Parkland Hospital project's general contractor, known as BARA, was led by managing partner Balfour Beatty Construction in a joint venture with Austin Commercial, H.J. Russell & Company and Azteca Enterprises. RCHA selected BARA and the Parkland Hospital project based on demonstrated team effort, diversity and local impact on the community. For example:
    • The BARA project team and Parkland Hospital senior leadership agreed that it would be essential for the project team to work together as a cohesive unit in order for a project of this size and complexity to be successful. BARA and Parkland created a Collaborative Project Delivery (CPD) model that included several key elements:
      • Primary consultants were engaged simultaneously, as a construction manager with design-assist responsibility;
      • Established a co-located office for key team members;
      • Aligned and coordinated contracts between the key consultants early in the project;
      • Used an integrated project management system for document control, accounting, Building Information Modeling (BIM), scheduling, cost control, and communication.
    • BARA engaged Dr. Ann McGee Cooper, an internationally renowned leadership development consultant, to guide the team through a leadership development and team building process. The process included conflict management, change management, and working with different personality types. As a result, the collective team successfully aligned in a manner that promoted respect, honesty, trust, collaboration and a commitment to doing what was best for the project as a whole.
    • Over 900 stakeholders were involved in influencing, evaluating or confirming decisions needed for the project. The original methodology for obtaining input from senior clinical operations leaders at the user level proved to be time-consuming and impractical for the duration of the project. As an alternate, three full-time clinical liaison positions from the medicine, surgery, and women’s services divisions were created to work directly with the project team. Their collective 50 years of nursing experience provided depth and breadth of knowledge about current operations, and insight into opportunities create optimal healing environment for patients, families and staff.
    • The project engaged over 150 minority and women-owned businesses, vendors, consultants, contractors and suppliers. A total of $236 million in contracts were awarded to these businesses, and the project team is proud that the MWBE participation goal of 30 percent was exceeded and totaled at 39 percent. 
    • Parkland Hospital is a public entity owned by the citizens of Dallas County. To assist the Parkland Foundation with public relations and fundraising efforts, BARA assisted with various on-site donor events, including an average of five project tours each week. To serve as a source of accurate clinical information, three nurses with long tenures at Parkland Hospital took turns accompanying construction team staff on the tours.
