Balfour Beatty Construction's Golf Outing Raises Over $110,000 to Support the 13th Annual Sharefest Workday

    April 27, 2016

TORRANCE, Calif. – Balfour Beatty Construction and Sharefest recently raised over $110,000 at their fourth annual Golf Outing in support of Sharefest’s 13th annual Workday – an event that mobilizes thousands of volunteers throughout Los Angeles County to complete tangible work projects that will change the quality of life for its residents.

The Golf Outing featured a scramble format for 160 golfers who played 18 holes at the Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif.  Participants included Balfour Beatty Construction employees and industry partners who helped organize the event and raised the record-setting dollar amount. Since its inception in 2013, the Golf Outing has raised a total of $360,250 to support annual Workday activities.

Money raised from the event helps fund beautification and improvement projects on school campuses in the Redondo, Torrance, Culver City and Wiseburn school districts during Sharefest’s 2016 Workday, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 30. That’s when over 350 Balfour Beatty Construction employees, contractors, vendors, site staff, students, family, and community members will show up to complete the beautification projects, which are all provided at no cost to the schools.

The funds also benefit Sharefest’s Youth Development Academy, a summer program offering academic and extracurricular activities to underserved middle and high school students, in addition to funding scholarships for students interested in pursuing higher education in the construction industry. The scholarships will be awarded to select students who attend schools located in each of the four school districts Balfour Beatty Construction is supporting during this year’s Workday.

“The golf outing has become a fun tradition that sets the tone and gears all of us up for Workday,” said John Bernardy, senior vice president of Balfour Beatty Construction. “I’m humbled by the fact that each year we raise more money than the previous year. This is a testament to the level of commitment and dedication our teammates and partners have towards making a difference in the communities where we build.”

Chad Mayer, executive director of Sharefest, was also appreciative of the effort to raise funds. “We are honored to have Balfour Beatty Construction as a title sponsor for this year’s Workday. Each year, the team at Balfour Beatty goes above and beyond to support our communities by giving so generously, adopting projects to meet needs, and bringing an incredible team of volunteers. The vendors they bring together also step up to further support Sharefest programs. Schools and communities are transformed for the better thanks to their dedicated efforts,” Mayer said.

Ten school campus improvement projects will be completed by Balfour Beatty Construction’s team of volunteers on April 30 in the following school districts and schools: Torrance Unified School District: Walteria Elementary School and Arnold Elementary School; Wiseburn Unified School District: Da Vinci Design High School; Culver City Unified School District: El Rincon Elementary School; Redondo Beach Unified School District: Birney Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, Parras Middle School, Adams Middle School, Redondo Shores High School, and Redondo Union High School
