Balfour Beatty Construction expands into multifamily market in Houston

    June 11, 2014

HOUSTON – According to the 2014 Houston Employment Forecast, Greater Houston Partnership, Houston’s population growth is forecasted at 625,000 new residents and 325,000 additional jobs over the next five years. Balfour Beatty Construction is expanding the company’s Texas multifamily group in the burgeoning Houston market to meet this growing demand.

As an established builder of more than 24,000 multifamily units, Balfour Beatty leads the industry as one of the top multi-unit residential contractors in the nation (Multifamily Executive, 2014). The company aims to increase its volume of projects and relationships in a market that is being fueled by robust economic and employment opportunities.

Shawn Bertrand recently joined Balfour Beatty Construction as senior project manager for multifamily in Houston. An experienced multifamily builder, Bertrand has brought more than 2,000 multifamily units to market across the country and holds a degree in architecture, as well as an MBA. In his new role, Bertrand will identify opportunities and be a resource for clients during the development and construction of their ground up multifamily projects. “As the newest member of our Texas multifamily group, Shawn will work closely with our clients to provide the same level of quality service that we offer nationwide,” stated Jack Brown, vice president of the Texas multifamily group.

With a firmly planted flag as a successful interiors business in Houston, Balfour Beatty Construction has also made a name for itself in large ground up commercial and education construction, securing projects such as the Marriott Marquis Houston Convention Center Hotel and Houston Independent School District’s Worthing High School. The company has made a significant investment to grow its business in Houston and moving into the multifamily market is part of this strategy.

“Expanding our multifamily practice into Houston will give us more diversity in the market to take advantage of the significant growth in the Houston economy,” stated Steve Mechler, Houston division president, Balfour Beatty Construction.
