Balfour Beatty Construction and San Diego Union High School District Celebrate Completion of Pacific Trails Middle School

    March 14, 2016

SAN DIEGO – Balfour Beatty Construction announces the completion of the $32 million Pacific Trails Middle School for the San Dieguito Union High School District. The 74,200-square-foot middle school project includes the construction of six buildings, landscaping and site improvements. The buildings include a two-story, 22-room classroom building, administration building, gymnasium, food service building, library/media arts building, and a multi-purpose art and music building.

The project completed in two phases with the first phase completing in August 2015. This phase included the classroom building and the multi-purpose building, along with the essential site work and landscaping necessary to accommodate an active campus. Phase two completed in February 2016, including the construction of the remaining four buildings, site work and landscaping.

Many sustainable features were incorporated into the project, which was designed by Lionakis Architecture. Examples include energy-saving occupancy sensors in each classroom; a programmable energy management system for HVAC and lighting; solar tubes on the roof that bring natural daylight into interior corridors; and drought tolerant plants on a reclaimed water system.

“From the project’s start, our number one priority was to ensure the project’s first phase completed in time to welcome the school’s first students last fall,” said Grace Chan, senior project manager at Balfour Beatty Construction. “Everyone on our project team, including our trade contractor partners, were fully committed to achieving this collaborative effort. Pull planning and other smart planning techniques were implemented to streamline the construction of multiple buildings, which enabled us to successfully meet the deadline for the district and students. That dedication and commitment continued throughout the completion of phase two. The recent grand opening not only celebrates the district’s newest school to be built since 2004, it also celebrates an amazing team effort that we were all proud to be a part of.”

Last September, Balfour Beatty and the San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC) partnered with Pacific Trails Middle School to host Green Apple Day of Service. The event brought together over 40 volunteers comprised of students, parents, teachers, family members, Balfour Beatty Construction and SDGBC employees, as well as representatives from supporting sponsors and vendors. Together the volunteers spent a full day constructing four 20-foot by 4-foot planter boxes in which plant species mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare were planted. The garden also serves as an outdoor classroom and meeting space for the school’s garden Club.

A grand opening ceremony was held on February 26 to celebrate the completion of all phases of construction.
