Balfour Beatty Construction’s Jamie Qualk Named to Engineering News Record California’s Top 20 Under 40
March 04, 2016
Balfour Beatty Construction congratulates Jamie Qualk, operations director of MEPs (mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems) in its Oakland office for being named one of Engineering News Record (ENR) California’s 2016
Top 20 Under 40 winners.
The publication’s annual regional competition recognizes 20 individuals under the age of 40 who represent the “Best-of-the-Best” in their construction and design careers by giving back to their industry and communities.
With 15 years’ experience in the construction industry, Qualk has managed multiple profit centers and service lines across diverse client types and geographies. In his current role for Balfour Beatty Construction in Northern California, he is responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives related to MEP, commissioning, energy, sustainability, Lean, and overall business tactics for the division.
Prior to joining the company in 2014, Qualk helped form a green-building consulting firm in Tennessee where he helped owners and project teams design, build and operate more sustainable buildings while also serving as a team leader. After successfully launching the company, he relocated to the Bay Area to join Balfour Beatty’s team as operations director MEP. One of Qualk’s first assignments was MEP coordination on the complex Transbay Block 6 project, which is part of the Transbay Redevelopment Area.
Most recently, Qualk’s expertise has been utilized on a confidential project involving the build-out of a 147,000-square foot, two-story data center facility serving approximately 25 megawatts (MW) of critical IT load with uninterrupted power supply and generator backup. His background and expertise is partially rooted in the tremendous experience he gained managing cross-functional project teams for high-profile clients and projects such as Yankee Stadium, McDonald’s corporate headquarters, Verizon, Macy’s, US Airways Arena (Phoenix Suns), Caterpillar Financial, Samsung headquarters, the EPA’s San Francisco headquarters — to name a few.
As a leader, Qualk enjoys sharing his knowledge, and has written and delivered graduate courses regarding the design, construction and operation of facilities, and renewable energy. In addition, he is regularly sourced in trade and local media on topics including building design and construction, green building, sustainability, renewable energy, building operations, net-zero, commissioning, market trends and project feasibility. In the past six years, he has been published over 20 times in reputable media outlets such as
USGBC Northern California
Building Design + Construction Magazine
(where he was also named one of the publication’s
“Top 40 Under 40”
winners in 2012), and Building Operating Management magazine. Qualk also speaks regularly on these and other subjects, and is frequently featured at conferences and industry events.
Dedicated to making a difference in the communities where Balfour Beatty builds, Qualk is an avid supporter of Sustainable Contra Costa and has served as a judge for its annual Green Building Awards Gala. Qualk holds a bachelor’s of engineering degree in civil engineering from Vanderbilt University. He is also a LEED AP
BD+C and is certified by the
AABC Commissioning Group (ACG)
as a Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA).
“This recognition is well-deserved,” said Sean Holliday, vice president of Balfour Beatty Construction’s California Division. “Jamie consistently serves as a relentless ally to his clients, partners and co-workers, and has earned a reputation for his ability to create customized, innovative solutions that add tremendous value to our clients’ projects. We are proud to have him as part of our Northern California team where he is setting the standard for construction excellence and is recognized among the best of the best in the California.”
