    Dallas Business Journal: Liberty Mutual reaches milestone on $325M campus in Plano's Legacy West

    Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance is ready to hit a major milestone for the $325 million, 1.1 million-square-foot campus in Plano's Legacy West.

    The regional campus, which is expected to hold up to 5,000 employees, has reached its most vertical point of 19 stories, which is being marked with a topping out ceremony on Tuesday.

    Upon completion, the Plano regional operations center will be a test for Liberty Mutual Insurance, which is considering similar consolidations.

    The Legacy West location will help Liberty Mutual attract the "right talent," where the company can engage, develop and make them want to stay with the insurer over the long haul, said Sean Murphy, Liberty Mutual's director of design and construction, told the Dallas Business Journal in a previous interview.

    "Plano is a real hot spot in North America for attracting talent," Murphy told me. "With the amenities on our doorstep and the tremendous job being done in Legacy West, we are seeing the pieces fall into place that people will want to relocate to and bring their families. It checks all the boxes."

    Murphy said Liberty Mutual expects 5,000 workers to operate from the new $325 million Plano hub, which will total 1.1 million square feet with two 11-story office towers atop a four-level, 5,500-car parking base to the building.

    Dallas-based KDC is the developer behind the project. Dallas-based Omniplan is the project architect. Balfour Beatty Construction is the general contractor for the development.

    Other players include Kimley-Horn as the project's civil engineer and Studio Outside as the landscape architect.

    About 2,400 employees already are employed by Liberty Mutual or affiliated companies (such as Safeco Insurance).

    By 2017, Murphy said Liberty Mutual plans on hiring a minimum of 1,000 new employees for customer service positions and other jobs.

    The remainder of the estimated 1,600 employees will relocate from other parts of the country, but Murphy said the company is still evaluating which jobs will relocate to North Texas.

    Construction on the campus is slated for the third quarter of 2017, with Liberty Mutual planning to move employees into the new operations hub in November.

    The $3.2 billion Legacy West mixed-use development is attracting a number of corporate and regional campuses, such as Toyota North America and JP Morgan Chase.

    On Wednesday, Boeing announced they planned to open a divisional headquarters office within Legacy West.
