Balfour Beatty's BIM experts return to the winner's podium

    November 29, 2016

Another victory for the Balfour Beatty Virtual Design and Construction team! Our expert team received the award for the “Best BIM Application in an Overseas Residential Project” at the 2016 buildingSMART Hong Kong International BIM Awards. This is the second year in a row we have been recognized by the buildingSMART organization for the use of BIM on our projects.

Our submission for this year was centered on the innovative use of BIM technology on the Westgate Santa Monica project - a $42 million dollar residential and retail complex in Los Angeles.

Senior BIM manager, Rudy Armendariz, and senior BIM specialist, Claire Mao, were instrumental in pulling together a holistic approach to leveraging BIM from design right through to construction planning. The team used a comprehensive mix of new tools and technology including the use of virtual reality, drones and photogrammetry to mitigate issues with site and safety issues, track construction and keep the project on-time and on-budget.

Balfour Beatty led the coordination efforts between the owner, design teams and trade partners throughout the entire process. The team developed a series of flexible pathways to integrate the different platforms and software being used to ensure all collaborators had access to consistent up-to-date project communications. By harnessing BIM’s collaborative facilities, the team was able to keep the client informed and engaged in decision-making in real-time, ultimately saving time and money.

buildingSMART is an international organization focused on developing and maintaining open international standards for BIM. Their annual awards recognizes the projects that demonstrate and inspire the use of BIM in a range of categories. In 2015, Balfour Beatty received the award for the “Best BIM application in Education.”
