Balfour Beatty Celebrates Juneteenth with Networking Event and Scholarship Presentation

    June 18, 2021

The company’s Network of Black Leaders and Executives (NOBLE) affinity group hosts employee and trade partner event with Historically Black College and University (HBCU) scholarship presentation, local guest speaker and entertainment

In honor of Juneteenth and in recognition of Balfour Beatty’s people-first commitment to diverse, equitable and inclusive workplaces for all, the company’s NOBLE affinity group hosted a networking event on June 17, 2021, for team members and local minority-owned and women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) trade partners at its national headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

The celebration featured live music from local saxophonist and HBCU student, Tyren Neasman, who played a compilation of rhythm and blues sounds for attendees. As a freshman civil engineering major at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), Tyren serves as second chair saxophonist for the college’s Marching 100 Band and is the only freshman saxophonist selected to participate in the nationally recognized Symphonic Wind Ensemble composed of 90 musicians from the University’s 650-musician band program.

As part of Balfour Beatty’s commitment to invest in the educational and professional development of diverse talent nationwide, the company presented Tyren with a $1,000 scholarship for his academic achievements and involvement in the HBCU’s music program.

To further the company’s understanding of Juneteenth and to promote critical and honest conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, Balfour Beatty welcomed guest speaker Jerry Hawkins, executive director of Dallas Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (DTRHT), who spoke on the importance of the newly designated national federal holiday, the history of race in Dallas and DTRHT’s efforts to drive change and transformation in the community.

“On behalf of Balfour Beatty and the company’s Network of Black Leaders and Executives, we are honored to present Tyren Neasman with a scholarship to further his studies at Florida A&M University,” said Earnest DeLoach, Jr., Balfour Beatty vice president of legal in Florida and NOBLE co-founder. “It is an even greater honor to present this scholarship to an HBCU scholar as our company commemorates the historic and contemporary importance of Juneteenth in our country. We’d like to thank our sponsors, Jerry Hawkins of DTRHT, Tyren Neasman, and our trade partners and NOBLE-Texas team members for making this event a success in furthering Balfour Beatty’s strategic priority of creating welcoming and inclusive workplaces that support and celebrate people of all backgrounds and experiences.”

A special thanks to our Juneteenth event sponsors Sunbelt Rentals, Alamo Tile & Stone, Balfour Beatty’s Special Projects Group, Sherwin Williams, Johnson Controls, Whitecap, Makita Tools, Home Depot, Mohawk Industries and Staples.
