Austin Business Journal: Get ready to Jenga: Austin's newest, tallest building sets groundbreaking

    January 06, 2016

The Independent — the off-kilter-styled luxury condo tower — has a groundbreaking scheduled for Monday, January 11, at the construction site near Third Street and West Avenue.
The $300 million, 58-story structure will be the tallest in Austin when it's completed in 2018. Balfour Beatty Construction has secured the general contractor assignment.
The Independent tower will soar 58 stories but will it eclipse Frost Bank Tower and The Austonian as the city's most dominant skyline element?

The international construction firm is dominating new construction along the north side of Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. The company is building the new Northshore high-rise apartments at the former Green Water Treatment Plant at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and San Antonio streets and recently earned the assignment to do major improvements at One Congress Plaza at the corner of Cesar Chavez Street and Congress Avenue.
The latest rendering of The Independent envisions the project at night. See other renderings of The Independent here.
Local dignitaries are scheduled to speak at the groundbreaking, including Austin Mayor Steve Adler, former Austin Mayor Will Wynn and state Sen. Kirk Watson.
The project is a joint venture, which includes Austin-based Constructive Ventures and Aspen Heights. CIM Group of Los Angeles is a primary investor in the bold development.
Rhode: Partners, headed by Brett Rhode — one of Austin Business Journal's picks for 2015 Newsmakers— designed the building. Condo sales are being handled by Urbanspace. Engineers include Urban Design Group, Garza Bury and DCI & Lam Consulting Engineers.
