Announcing Balfour Beatty's AGC Build America Award Winner

    April 30, 2021

Congratulations to the Heart of LA (HOLA) Arts, Enrichment & Recreation Center project team for being selected as the Winner of the 2021 Construction Risk Partners Build America Award, in the Building New (under $10 million) category. AGC President Bob Lanham and representatives from Construction Risk Partners will present the award during AGC’s Annual Convention at the Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, September 22 at 7:30 AM at the Marriott World Center in Orlando, Florida.

    About this project:

Balfour Beatty delivered the new, state-of-the-art, Heart of LA (HOLA) Arts, Enrichment & Recreation Center located within Lafayette Park in downtown Los Angeles. HOLA is a non-profit organization that provides underserved youth with an equal chance to succeed through free programs in academics, arts, wellness programs, and athletics in a nurturing environment.  Their success is founded on safe environments, nurtured by a no-wrong-door approach, amplified by world-renowned partners, and perpetuated by students who become productive, caring, and responsible leaders.

The three-story 32,000 square foot facility consists of 50 modular units built from single-use shipping containers and converted to custom-designed activity rooms, community rooms, music rooms and creative lab spaces. Each space features full LED lighting, ductless HVAC systems and floor-to-ceiling windows. The new HOLA Facility will also house the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) at HOLA program, with a new ensemble room opening up to the park for public performances. The highly innovative construction creates an extremely energy and cost-efficient structure. More traditional modular construction blends with these components to create the Center’s multi-purpose Performance Pavilion and various common areas. The facility’s design and footprint allow for maximum preservation of green spaces and will be aesthetically compatible with the Park’s existing Recreation Center and gym. Watch a time lapse of the construction here!

The new Arts, Enrichment & Recreation Center enables HOLA to:

    • Increase the number of families reached from 2,100 to 4,000 annually – a 74% growth!

    • Increase the number of youth served annually in the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) at HOLA Program from 250 to 350!

HOLA are also able to relocate and expand their SmartStart Elementary Education Program and Music Programs. With more than 300 families on the waiting list at HOLA, they are able to join with partners to meet the needs of our community. STEM and STEAM programming, college access and success programs, family counseling and intervention services, career development programming, and myriad parent classes and other social service resources will also expand in this vibrant new home. These vital programs serve even more children and their families - and serve them better.

Project Executive Dennis Kuykendall shares, “We could not pass up the opportunity to partner with the entire Heart of Los Angeles team and be a part of this truly unique and sustainable Arts Enrichment & Recreation Center that will serve as a center for the education, growth and empowerment of the inner-city youth of Los Angeles. Selection of the project as the Winner of the 2021 Construction Risk Partners Build America Award is not only an honor to Balfour Beatty and the build team, but also an honor to showcase the mission of Heart of Los Angeles and the project to a national audience.”
